The Thai Bar & Restaurant – A Little Slice of Thailand in Glasgow

When we were kindly invited to dine at The Thai Bar & Restaurant in Shawlands, expectations were already sky-high. After all, it’s known as one of the go-to spots for authentic Thai cuisine in Glasgow. But I’m happy to report that not only were those expectations met—they were deliciously surpassed.

From the moment we stepped through the doors at 317 Kilmarnock Road, it was clear we were in for something special. The restaurant has a bright, contemporary interior that manages to feel both modern and warmly inviting. Tasteful nods to Thai culture are dotted around the space — nothing over the top, just enough to make you smile and feel that instant holiday vibe.

We were greeted with warm smiles from the staff (always a good sign), and the hospitality continued throughout the evening. Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely happy to host — every member of the team added something to our experience.

The menu didn’t make our choices very easy, as pretty much everything on it sounds like a winner. I liked that it includes both classics like Pad Thai and iconic Thai Curries, to modern creations, plus a great range of drinks, including Thai beer and lovely iced teas.

Let’s get to the food!

Starters: A Flavourful Beginning

We began with the Chicken Wontons — golden, crisp parcels that somehow managed to be both light and packed full of savoury goodness. Think crunchy outside, perfectly seasoned filling inside. A great opener.

But then came the Tom Kha Soup, and honestly, this was a showstopper. A rich yet fresh coconut milk broth with galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, chilli, coriander, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and a tangy hint of lime juice. This is one of Thailand’s greatest hits, and The Thai’s version hits every note. Creamy but not heavy, packed with vibrant herbs and spices. It’s the kind of soup that makes you momentarily forget where you are. (Shawlands? Bangkok? Who can say.)

Mains: Comfort Meets Sophistication

Felix had the Massaman Curry with Lamb, and it was the kind of dish you don’t want to end. Slow-cooked chunks of tender lamb mingling with aromatic spices, creamy coconut milk, and just the right touch of sweetness. The jasmine rice on the side played its role beautifully, soaking up every last bit of that gorgeous sauce.

I went for the Thai Beef Salad. I love a good salad, especially one with hearty meats and fresh, colourful veggies. This salad had it all. Juicy grilled steak slices, crunchy fresh veg, zingy herbs, and a punchy lime-fish sauce dressing. A bit spicier than expected, but I truly enjoyed it until the last bite.

Dessert: Ending on a High

Just when we thought we couldn’t be more impressed, along came dessert: Mango and Sweet Coconut Sticky Rice. The presentation here was next level — it was art! A beautifully plated, colourful little masterpiece that looked almost too good to eat. (Almost.) The mango was fresh and ripe, the sticky rice subtly sweet and infused with coconut, and together they created a dish that was light, balanced, and completely satisfying.

Final Thoughts

What really sets The Thai apart, beyond the wonderful food, is the passion that comes through in every detail. You can taste it in each dish, see it in the presentation, and feel it in the warm, attentive service. The team here isn’t just cooking; they’re celebrating Thai cuisine with care and pride, and it shows.

So whether you’re a Thai food devotee or just in the mood for a great meal in a welcoming space, The Thai Bar & Restaurant is more than worth a visit. In fact, it might just be one of the best places in Glasgow for Thai food, full stop!
