March 10 marks Mario Day (MAR10, get it? ) and as a big fan of the cheery hero from Nintendo, I had to celebrate with a special cocktail 😁
This date is the perfect occasion for remembering the iconic and beloved video game character that has brought so much fun to our lives. I grew up in the lates 80s and 90s with all the classic Nintendo games, and I became particularly attached to Mario Kart and Mario Party games.
So, to mark the occasion this year, I decided to knock up a cocktail with the iconic Piranha Plant coming out of the warp pipe.
This idea came from other warp pipe cocktails I’d seen online, but I added a specially decorated Piranha Plant with strawberries and white chocolate!
The warp pipe cocktails I’d seen were made using Midori, which is a green colour melon liqueur, but I’m not a fan of the stuff, so I went for Crème de Menthe instead – just as green (or more) and much better in flavour, unless you don’t like mint of course!
I was going to use gin for this, but it turned out I didn’t have any left in my cupboard 😐 So I used vodka instead, and it worked very well! If you want to recreate this with gin, I’d say it’s a good idea, it really depends on your preference.
See below for ingredients and method. These cocktails are very easy to make and the taste is super refreshing!

Super Mario Piranha Plant Cocktail
- 1.5 ounce (or 1 standard jigger) Vodka
- 1.5 ounce (or 1 standard jigger) Crème de Menthe (I used Bols)
- 1/2 Lemon, juiced
- Tonic Water to fill tall glasses
- For Piranha Plant garnish: strawberries, white chocolate and straws
Combine vodka, Crème de Menthe and the juice from half a lemon in a cocktail shaker or glass, and stir with ice. For the sugar rim, use a lemon wedge to moisten the rim of the glass and dip in granulated sugar. Add ice to glasses, pour the vodka mix in, and add Tonic Water to fill the glass or to taste.
Garnish with decorated strawberries, full-on Mario mode with piranha plants!
Strawberry Piranha Plant Garnish
To make the piranha plants, melt some white chocolate and cut the tip of the strawberry in ‘V’ shape to make the “mouth”, then use a spoon to add melted white chocolate around the border, and add in dots around the body. Carefully pierce with a straw (I used Stroodles which are eco-friendly pasta straws)
